Feed Management and Farming Operations

INTRODUCTION

Morgan Agri is a well-established agricultural company in the Delmas area, founded in the late 1990’s. The company comprises a substantial feedlot and agronomy operation on 5500 ha agricultural land. The beautiful natural backdrop provides for well-nurtured cattle which, in turn, ensures quality meat products.

Our Farming Operations

The Agronomy division, together with a highly efficient maintenance team, contributes substantially to the production and distribution of our own fodder. Our farmlands produce maize and soya which allows us to prepare sustainable quantities of food for the feedlot. This is also monitored by our group of agricultural professionals to ensure that there is always enough supply to meet demand.

Feeding Management

At Morgan Agri, we grow our own crops in order to produce feed for the feedlot. Our agricultural team constantly monitor the crops and soil content to ensure optimum growth and maximum yield per hectare. Pro-active steps are also taken to manage the risk of diseases and infestations.

Our feed recipes are scientifically mixed at our modern, state-of-the-art feed mill, which uses PLC (Programmable Logic Controls) technology to mix and produce the required daily amount of feed. Additional ingredients, which are sourced exclusively from local agricultural companies and business partners, are also used in the production process.

The computer-aided feeding program at Morgan Agri enables us to automatically control the exact formula and amount of feed supplied daily to each individual pen in the feedlot.

Custom Feeding

One of Morgan Agri’s many specialities include Custom Feeding – the process of feeding and managing a client’s cattle until they are ready for processing.

Our Custom feeding service includes:

  • Expert Care for Incoming Cattle

Upon arrival, cattle are weighed, ear tagged for positive identification, traceability and data-capturing, treated for internal and external parasites, given vitamins and growth stimulants and vaccinated against various diseases as needed. This is done at either one of our two dual-processing facilities.

  • Scientific Ration

Cattle are fed three times daily with a ration that has been formulated by consulting expert nutritionists and processed in our on-site feed mill. A trained bunk reader calculates the amount of feed the cattle have consumed each day and adjusts the next feeding volume accordingly. The idea is to give the cattle just the right amount of feed without any leftovers. This allows for the supply of fresh feed for each feeding session, which ensures the cattle will reach their optimum weight for slaughter purposes.

  • Animal Health

Each day, trained staff evaluate the animals individually. Sick animals are taken to a hospital pen and are given special treatment. These checks and treatment take place under strict supervision. Records on sick animals are kept by recording their ear tag number, the date of treatment and the type of treatment. When mortalities occur, a detailed mortality report is issued.

  • Livestock procurement, Transport and Marketing

Our team of expert buyers visit our breeders and attend livestock auctions throughout the country on a regular basis. This ensures that only the finest weaners are acquired at the best price. Transport of cattle from the sales yards to the feedlot is also available. Marketing of cattle is done as soon as they reach their optimum weight and are ready to be sold.

  • What are the charges for these services?

The charges for feeding, daily inspection, treating sick animals and the marketing of cattle that are ready to sell, are set at a daily fixed rate. The cost of feeding and treatment of the animals are for the client’s account. The typical monthly invoice will contain detailed information on the cost. An additional progress report is also issued monthly. At the end of the feeding period, clients receive a detailed performance report related to their cattle.

  • How many cattle can be sent for custom feeding?

The majority of our pens can hold up to 120 cattle. The cattle within each pen must be of uniform type, size and sex.

  • What kinds of cattle are fed at our feedlot?

We feed almost all kinds of cattle, ranging from straight-bred British breeds to crossbreds of all kinds. However, dairy breeds are high-risk animals to feed and are not recommended.
